Antioch is the second-largest city in Contra Costa County, California. The city is widely known as the gateway to the California Delta, thanks to the point where the San Joaquin and the Sacramento Rivers enter the Pacific.
Who wouldn’t want to live in a city with a pleasant year-round climate and a multicultural society with spectacular sceneries in the mix? Unfortunately, communities in Antioch are experiencing a spike in substance abuse and its negative impact on families and the community.
Even as the coronavirus pandemic comes under a measure of control, it has left in its wake a trail of addiction and mental health disorders as people turn to illicit drugs to cope with the abrupt lifestyle change. The good news is that many high-quality treatment centers exist in Antioch and the surrounding areas to help those struggling with substance use and mental health disorders.

Begun in an abandoned house in 1971, Second Chance has grown into a multi-site rehab facility for those in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse.

After more than 50 years of operation, Second Chance still maintains the tradition of healing through the sharing of knowledge and personal experiences.
However, Second Chance has continued to transform and adapt to the latest practices in addiction recovery, for example, transitioning from the informal group and individual counseling method to intake/assessment, treatment planning, and more structured group and individual sessions. Also, all the counselors at Second Chance are trained and credentialed professionals monitored by the state department of health care services and Alameda County Behavioral Health.
Even so, most of Second Chance’s treatment team has a lived experience of addiction, homelessness, domestic violence, and recovery. Only individuals attending Second Chance’s Diversion Program are charged a fee.
