The pristine, majestic beauty of the Appalachian Mountains stands in stark contrast to the immense human tragedy inflicted on West Virginia through drug and alcohol abuse.

While nowhere in the country has been spared from the ravages of the ongoing opioid crisis, the Mountain State has suffered far more than most. In 2018, West Virginia had the highest rate of drug-overdose deaths anywhere in America, at 52 per 100,000 people. Rates of alcohol use disorder and abuse of other substances are also some of the highest in the country.

Thankfully, there are numerous rehabilitation centers throughout West Virginia that provide top-quality, compassionate care for people struggling with addiction. Those who are seeking help have access to a wide variety of recovery programs and services at many different pricing options and levels of care.

These rehabilitation clinics provide detoxification and medication-assisted treatment specifically for those addicted to opioids (including heroin, morphine, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers). They offer their services to adults 18 years of age and older.

Treatment plans are customized for each individual patient. Prescriptions for Subutex (buprenorphine), Suboxone (buprenorphine + suboxone), and Vivitrol (naltrexone) are all available, depending on whichever medication proves most effective for you.

This medication-assisted treatment is offered in conjunction with therapeutic interventions to assist patients in making the appropriate behavioral adjustments to improve their emotional health and mental wellbeing. Recovery Point West Virginia is a network of residential addiction treatment centers in Huntington, Charleston, Bluefield, and Parkersburg. Huntington actually has two centers, one of which, “HER Place”, is exclusively for women. As a registered non-profit financed entirely through grants, donations, and fundraising campaigns, Recovery Point West Virginia provides its long-term addiction recovery programs at no cost to patients.

Premised on the 12-Step method and a system of peer mentorship, the treatment program is a two-phased recovery process that lasts approximately 6-12 months. In exchange for room and board, residents complete daily work assignments at the facility (such as food preparation, custodial duties, and groundskeeping) while attending individual, group, and/or family psychotherapy sessions, as well as outside AA/NA meetings. Residents also undertake an intensive curriculum of classes and written assignments designed to promote self-compassion and personal accountability.

Upon completing Step 12, residents become “Silver Chip” members. They are granted additional autonomy and responsibilities, becoming peer mentors themselves and helping to facilitate recovery dynamics classes for newer residents. After finishing the program, discharged residents are educated about relapse prevention and attend various life skills workshops.

While new residents are always welcome on a walk-in basis, those at risk of experiencing acute withdrawal symptoms are advised to detox beforehand, as Recovery Point only offers a “non-medical detox” without medication. However, they will collaborate with your prescriber if you are already enrolled in medication-assisted therapy elsewhere.

This is accomplished through individual, group, and family therapy sessions, as well as regular activities, art classes, and educational programs.

Highland-Clarksburg Hospital also provides financial counseling services to assist patients in applying for Medicaid. If you meet the income eligibility requirements, they also offer fully subsidized “Charity Care” or a sliding scale discount.

Through its Adolescent Co-occurring Disorders Program (aka the “ROAD” program), River Park Hospital provides a psychiatric residential treatment program for teenagers (ages 12-17) suffering from both mental health and addiction-related issues.

Please note that the ROAD program is specifically designed for adolescents in state custody. Admission requires a court order, as well as a certifying letter from a licensed mental health physician summarizing their case and detailing their intellectual functioning, previous treatment attempts, and current trauma needs (for young adults not in state custody, Highland-Clarksburg Hospital runs an excellent residential rehabilitation program).

The ROAD program utilizes an integrated, cognitive behavioral therapy approach that seeks to holistically alleviate the physiological, psychological, and interpersonal problems underlying patients’ mental health and addiction issues. Counseling is based on the Narcotics/Alcoholics Anonymous 12-Step program. Individual, group, and/or family therapy sessions are held on a daily basis in conjunction with recreational activities, in-house schooling, and academic education. The ROAD program also provides community reintegration and discharge services after the patient is released.
