Waco is a city in Texas, which is also the county seat of McLennan County in Texas, United States. According to a TripAdvisor 2018 list, Waco ranked as the second-best travel destination in the United States, behind Kapaa, Hawaii. Before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the Waco hub (the expanding downtown area of Waco) welcomed more than 30,000 weekly visitors and saw about 1.6 million visitors annually. But despite Waco’s fledging status as a tourist destination and a great place to live and work, the city is also struggling with substance abuse.

A news report published by Central Texas News noted that heroin is becoming more accepted, used, and abused in Waco because it has become cheaper. Moreover, social and economic changes caused by the pandemic may have worsened the situation. But Waco and the cities near it have dozens of world-class, well-equipped rehabs and treatment centers available to those struggling with all forms of addictions and mental health disorders.

Both AA and Al-Anon are support groups. The Al-Anon & Al-Ateen have strong similarities to the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) fellowships, but both fellowships differ in several ways. For example, while Alcoholics Anonymous is for people struggling with or recovering from alcohol dependency, Al-Anon is for people whose family members have histories of alcohol use disorder.

The Al-Ateen is specifically for young people whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking problem. You should check out this page to help you self-evaluate if you are an adolescent and wonder if the Al-Ateen program is for you. The AA and Al-Anon have the same vision of helping people and those affected by alcoholism. In fact, Al-Anon’s overall plans are AA's responsibility; however, traditionally Al-Anon is a separate entity and responsible for its own speakers and meetings, including Al-Ateen speakers, meetings, and activities.

AA conventions must have Al-Anon participation to have Al-Ateen participation. Both fellowships play very important roles in society. AA helps people who have or are struggling with addictions themselves, while Al-Anon helps people who’d had to watch someone close to them experience addiction. After all, addiction is referred to as a family disease because it affects both the addicted and those close to them.

Al-Ateens is particularly important because kids who are caught in the toxic situations caused by a family member’s addictions are at risk of developing abnormal emotional, mental, and physical health. They’re also at a higher risk of becoming addicts later in life when compared to their peers.

Al-Anon & Al-Ateen offer a safe environment for recovery, both for the addicted and their families. The goal of this program is to unite the family members and help them find healing.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. The Central Texas Intergroup office represents a partnership among groups in the community. It is often the first port of call for alcoholics seeking AA help in Waco.

The Central Texas AA Intergroup provides services including stock and sale of AA literature, maintenance of AA meeting listings and distribution lists, provision of information on treatment facilities, hospitals, and sober living facilities, response to phone or walk-in requests for help from alcoholics, and more.

The AA fellowship is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements to join AA. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem.

For those seeking help with alcoholism, the only requirement for AA membership is your desire to quit drinking. AA rehabs are structured to be self-supporting, and membership is free except for voluntary contributions by members to help cover expenses like rent, coffee, etc. They offer Open Meetings which is open to the public, and members-only Closed Meetings.

One of the most important AA resources is what the AA community calls the Big Book which is essentially a book designed to show alcoholics “precisely how they can recover” from their addiction. Each Midland AA meeting is autonomous, which means their meeting formats may vary from location to location.
