The city of Independence, situated in Jackson County, is the fifth-largest city in Missouri. But, perhaps, the city is best known for being the hometown of President Harry S. Truman and hosting the famous Truman Library and Museum.

Independence was initially a frontier town and is the start of many great trails, like the Oregon Trail and California Trail, and even hosted Lewis and Clark for a stop on their famous journey. Independence has served as the backdrop for thousands of great American stories.

Unfortunately, the opioid epidemic threatens the storied history of Independence, with many residents suffering from addiction. All over America, substance abuse and other forms of addiction are devastating lives, families, communities, and dreams. Thankfully, there are many excellent, affordable rehab centers in Independence ready to help people live independent, addiction-free lives.

Midwest ADP was founded in 1985 with the primary purpose of helping people with their alcohol and drug issues, especially court-ordered programs and those areas that aren’t the prime focus of medical treatment facilities. Midwest’s areas of focus include supervised probation services, Substance Awareness Traffic Offender Program (SATOP) screenings and programs, and alcohol and drug education.

Substance use usually comes with planned and unplanned complications that can easily become a barrier to successful recovery and reintegration into society. That’s where Midwest ADP comes in. Midwest ADP can even help you regain your driving privileges if you have lost them due to a drug or alcohol-related incident.

Midwest ADP specializes in nonmedical services, so Independence residents interested in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) facilities might want to consider Coltrain Medical Group or Valley Hope of Overland Park, to provide medically managed detox.

Midwest ADP is approved by Missouri SATOP to provide SATOP programming online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although Midwest has been operating and growing for more than three decades, it continues to provide its services with a personalized touch.

The Crossroads Program strives to create a comfortable and supportive environment where young people and their families can receive the care and support they need to overcome the impact of substance abuse.

The Crossroads Program is a family-owned rehab focusing on young people and therefore does not utilize treatment programs intended for adults. Tri-County is dedicated to providing these services using a person-centered, whole-person approach with quality assurance and affordability. Its unique provider network allows it to provide affordable services to an average of 8000 people each year.

Tri-County Mental Health Services specializes in the areas of behavioral health, mental health, substance use treatment, prevention, and overall wellness. Some of Tri-County’s services include treatment court and hospital diversion programs.

Their treatment court program, also known as “drug court,” is intended to recommend treatment and recovery instead of punishment. However, it does require participants to enter a guilty plea before they attend an inpatient treatment program and regularly report to a judge while taking random drug tests and sometimes, perform community service.

Tri-County provides its hospital diversion program in collaboration with local hospitals and community mental health centers to divert individuals with psychiatric and/or substance use disorders from emergency rooms and hospitals to alternative services to reduce the number of hospitalizations. Tri-County Mental Health Services offers one of the most comprehensive mental and behavioral health services in the area.

Private Payment, Superbill, Prior Authorization

Coltrain specializes in medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorders. Coltrain is an outpatient program, giving it more flexibility and allowing clients to continue with their normal daily obligations while receiving life-saving treatment for substance abuse. Clients only have to come in once a month after the initial intake assessment and a follow-up evaluation.

Coltrain is an “MAT center” in that it mainly offers medically assisted detoxification/withdrawal. So Coltrain does not provide on-site behavioral therapy involved to accompany medication-assisted treatment. However, Coltrain understands the importance of counseling in a recovery treatment program which is why they refer clients out to other local counseling facilities.

For those interested in comprehensive counseling and therapy, Diakonos Counseling, is an excellent center to consider. Counseling is not mandatory at Coltrain Medical Group as its specialization is in managing withdrawal symptoms, drastically reducing cravings, and stopping relapses for good. For this purpose, treatment is ongoing for up to a year or more.

If the client is experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms, Coltrain can start the client on medication right away. Unfortunately, Coltrain does not accept personal or commercial insurance plans, although they can provide prior authorization for the insurer to pay or a “superbill,” which the client can submit to the insurer for reimbursement.

Healing House believes in a faith-based approach to treating substance use disorders. It has been doing this since 2002, during which time it has purchased and refurbished numerous vacant homes–several of which were former drug houses–into safe, sober homes for both men and women. This is not counting two apartment buildings that Healing House purchased and restored into a family restoration center where children are reunited with their parents.

There is no denying the extent of damage addiction is capable of wrecking on a person’s life, family, career, and future, but Healing House exists to help those impacted by addiction to find healing and restoration so they can dream and live again.  Each year, Healing House facilitates positive changes in the lives of hundreds of men and women, including women with children.

The staff at Healing House includes instructors, counselors, and peer support specialists who utilize a tri-fold approach to addiction treatment that addresses the individual’s mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.
